How much can one amazing stepdad bake in a year? (Spoiler: A lot!)

Over the course of 2024, my stepdad tracked every single thing he baked. We’re talking breads, rolls, pizza doughs – 34 different types in total! He noted:

  • Which flour types he used (down to the specific numbers: 550, 1050, Vollkorn…)

  • Which leavening agents (yeast, sourdough, Lievito Madre)

  • Exact flour quantities for each bake

  • And the total output in kilos

Obviously, I had no choice but to turn this glorious baking data into a visualization. I decided to make him a poster.

Step 1: Data

The raw data came from a lovingly kept Excel file – a detailed baking log with names, ingredients, weights, and frequency.

Step 2: Sketching

Before touching Figma, I grabbed my sketchbook and started illustrating some baked goods and flour bags by hand. Later, I traced and cleaned them up in Illustrator, giving them a consistent style while keeping that slightly handmade charm.

Step 3: Designing the Poster

I designed the full layout in Figma, guided by one main goal: make it digestible, fun, and beautiful.

Some highlights from the final poster:

  • Icon-style bread illustrations with names, quantities, and average weight

  • A color-coded system for flour types and leavening agents

  • Tiny flour bags at the top showing how much of each type was used (e.g., 44 kg of wheat 550!)

  • A shiny badge with the total weight

  • Everything in warm, toasty tones – because, well, bread

The Result: A Data Tribute to My Stepdad’s Baking

So how much can one amazing stepdad bake in a year?

176.7 kg of baked goods. I repeat: one hundred seventy-six point seven!

The finished piece is a snapshot of a year of baking, one loaf at a time.

My stepdad now has it hanging in the kitchen, and I love that it’s both decorative and deeply personal. There’s something really satisfying about turning everyday routines into visual stories –especially when they smell like freshly baked bread.
